Prepping Your Sketchbook for Fun and Travel - Drawing & Painting Tips

Spring is in the Air!!

Boats at the Dock - Sketchbooking - Prepping our Sketchbook

I know, I may be a bit premature, but every time I go out and walk in the sunshine I feel we are creeping closer and closer to SPRING.  There is a clean crisp smell to the air, birds are chirping and their numbers seem to be be increasing.  And if you check the sunny spots on the ground,  there is grass growing and bulbs peeking out.
It's time. . . . .

It's Time to prep your sketchbook for fun and adventure. My fun and adventures are centered around Outdoor Sketching.  It could be on a hike, a kayaking trip or a simple day trip.  It's getting out of the studio and drawing and painting life.  Capturing a part of that special Moment.

(NB: I have a video version of this post on YouTube:  "Prepping Your Sketchbook for Fun and Travel" )

Simple Doodles and Stamps can set up and interesting page that invites you to draw and journal

The Colours on the Lake - Pictures and symbols added ahead of time. For me they add a Joy and Sparkle to my page. Themed to my trip - travel in Yellowknife, NT.

Why Prep Your Sketchbook?
Your book is your own special place.  It is there for you.  Just imagine being out on a mountainous trail, settling down on a mossy rock, looking out at breathtaking view, opening your sketchbook and finding . . . . a little gem on your page.  I guarantee it will bring a smile to your lips, a sparkle to your eye and spot of inspiration to your work.

Stickers, Doodles and Collages can add a special touch to your page.

What are these GEMS on your Page?
Gems are special notes, pictures, colours, doodles that you have added to your book.  It can be simple things like your favourite inspirational phrases or words written on the side/top/bottom of the page.  Words that are important to you.

Shapes and Doodles are some of my favourite things to add to my pages.  I flip through book and periodically pick a page.  I might doodle down the side, in the corner or make a border across the bottom.  The doodles may become a divider for a picture or writing.  (I quite often like to journal about my sketch and what was happening at the time.)

Some of the little page decorators I used for my Kayaking Trip - These were prepped ahead of time. Colour to be added when I paint the pages.

Themes are often part of my Sketchbook Prepping.  For example, this spring I know I will be off on a kayaking trip to the Interior of BC for a few weeks.  On my pages,  I will add little images of birds and animals we will see on our trip, symbols of things we will do and of course, a few Inspirational Phrases.

Fishing Shack at Peggy's Cove - Colour added ahead of time

Splashes of Colour, Stamps, stickers, collaging are also ways to adding a special touch to a page.  Its really open to your imagination.  (NB: The watercolour wash for Fishing Shack at Peggy's Cove and Boats at the Dock, at the top of the page, was added weeks ahead as prep.  On my sketching day I opened the page and drew my picture.  Awesome interesting effects with the colour, eh?!)

Rest Stop near Kamloops - I like to colour the doodles when I paint the page.  It seems to give a better flow.

Things to think about as you Add those GEMS
- you don't have to do every page
- use permanent ink pens if you plan on using a wet medium later
- don't colour your drawings, colour them when you draw on the page to better integrate them into the page. ( This is a personal choice thing.  Sometimes it is nice to have that shiny coloured image in the corner.  You decide)
- mix it up.  Put some on the top, some on the corners, borders on edges or as dividers)
- don't prep all your sketchbooks.  I have several books on the go at any time and they all have their own focus.  My travel books are always prepped but my books that I use to plan or experiment with are not.

Right now, when it is cold and dreary, it is a perfect time to get prepping your sketchbook.  Challenge yourself to stretch your imagination as you create those little gems.  Your Sketchbook will be a Joyful, Happy Place, just for you, with lots of little surprises buried in its pages.

1 Awesomemazonly Sketchbook Activity - Painting & Drawing Tips

Are you up for a Challenge?
A Sketchbooking Activity that will keep you entertained for days?

And when you are done, you will feel sooooooooo good.  And will have some NEW thoughts about your own practice.
Ok. Put your confidence on high and give this a try.

DUCKS IN THE WATER - Mixed Media
See a full view of DUCKS ON THE WATER on Youtube here.   (Be sure to like and comment while your are there. 🤗)

For this Activity you need to first prepare your paper

1.  Cut 6 pieces of paper, 5.5 x 7.5 (I used Rivas paper and Arches 140 HP.  Use any paper that is strong and thick enough to take paint.  Watercolour paper of any kind is good.)  You can have more than 6 panels but keep it to even numbers)

Panel 1 Monoprint

2.  Add random colour to your papers using 2 or 3 colours.  I prepared my paper as Monotypes.  (See last post: Have you tried Monotypes There is a write up and video to help you .)  If you don't want to to prints on your paper than just make random marks with your 3 colours like I did with my Monoprints.  You can collage things to your paper or stencil things.  Anything to give it a marks but try and not let them get too dark so your ink work will show.

Panel 2 - my Monoprint - random colour that has interesting textures, shapes . . .

3.  When dry take your papers and arrange them in some kind of order.  I laid mine out horizontally as I liked the look and feel of that arrangement.  Tape them together with the tape on the back.  Fold them up like an accordion.

You're ready to draw. . .

Now settle down, I know your confidence just dropped a bit.  You can draw whatever you like. Flowers, buildings, people, landscapes . . .

When walking with Max I saw some mallard ducks and decided I would draw ducks in the water. (I am a wildlife artist so you knew animals would be in there somewhere.) Totally random idea that had nothing to do with my colours or their shapes.

Just a few of my duck pictures for reference
I searched through my photo references for ducks.  I am out at Riefel Bird Sanctuary a lot as I have work in their gift shop so I have lots of duck pictures.  I picked a few that had ducks doing different things.

I looked at my first page and decided a duck could peek over the painted area and drew him in.  I then began to make the painted area more bush like.  As I moved to the next page it had lots of marks on it and decided to make them into grasses and hid a duck in the grasses.

Panel 1 & 2 once I started drawing

That is where I stalled  . . . .

I needed more ideas as to what could be along the water's edge. (Confidence low, for sure.) Fortunately Max and I walk regularly in a wooded area by a small stream and I could take some pictures and get ideas.  You might have to wonder the internet a bit.  (Remember, I did say this was going to take you a few days to finish)  I also realized I needed more than a little shading to make things work. (See Tools as I introduced more tools into the drawing part.)

Got some great ideas for things to put along my water's edge from these pictures.  Really loved the fern in the rock cluster in the bottom picture.

Of course, ferns, bushes, tree trunks, rocks, branches, leaves . . .  They were all there.  I started drawing a few of these. (Confidence Way Up again.)  Always I am mindful of what I am drawing and not paying a lot of attention to the colours that were already there.

Panels 1-5 WIP - Realized I needed a another panel as I couldn't make an accordion book with only 5 panels!!

Sometimes I  captured a blobs into my leaf or rock but I mostly stayed true to my images and let the colour fall where it wanted to.  To me this is the fun of it.  Seeing how the colours suddenly make something so interesting in a way I never would have painted it.

Didn't use a lot of materials to complete my pictures.  They were added as the need arose.

Tools:
My choice of tools also developed as I went and as needs arose.  I need shading and values - I decided to use Herbin Perle Noire Ink.  It gave me great grayscales that matched my ink and didn't add more colours to my picture.
I used 08 & 05 Picma Black Pens.  (found the 08 gave a stronger line)
Steadler Fine Tip Ink Pen.
Pencil to do some layout.
Black Coloured Pencil to shade rocks and give them texture.
White Charcoal pencil to lighten the acrylic blobs.
Molotow One4all Acrylic Pen to give me a shot of white, when I needed it.

Don't hesitate to use other things to meet your goals.
Lots happening in this panel but after putting in the shading and softening some of the colour with the white Charcoal it turned out pretty nice.
Yes, this project will keep you busy for awhile.  Yes, your confidence will ebb and flow as you work through it.  Yes, it is almost never ending as there will always be a little something more you can do.  And Yes, you will be very pleased with it when you're done.

But you're not done yet. . . .

Next post I will show you how to finish it up to make that Awesomemazonly Sketchbook.

Time to GET STARTED on Your Art - Painting & Drawing Tips

Actually the beginning of the year is a time of reckoning,
 a time for New Starts.

Captured this young eagle out on the Mud Flats last winter.  I can't wait to get his drawing underway.

It doesn't have to be something totally new but maybe a New Approach, New Effort, New Enthusiasm.  Something to shake up the old and bring on 'the new'.

In the Creation Process, New Starts can come in many forms.

And maybe more easily defined than life. In my case I have been seized by new ideas and overwhelmed with things I want to do.  I have a new drawing of a young eagle I am anxious to start. And a small series on Robins that is really calling me. It involves my ink tangles and watercolours together in what I think is an interesting way.  Steve, has already given it a heads up.

My Three Robins are ready to roll - I can't wait to put them into my latest project.

I know, you say, he is my husband and of course he likes whatever I do.  Not...  He is quick to tell me if something doesn't work.  Of course he always follows with an apology but the critiquing comment is there.  I must admit I admire his honesty and I know when he says something is interesting I have really hit the mark. So you can imagine when he thinks my idea for the robins is interesting, I am really excited.  I just want to jump in and work on them.  To heck with everything else!!

What about you?  Are you ready to GET STARTED on something?

Today is also a special day for me.  It marks my 11th year as a Blogger.  I decided to look back to find things to MOVE FORWARD.  In looking back I found many posts that may inspire you to GET STARTED:

1.   Start new habits: Whether you like to draw, doodle or journal having a sketchbook is fun.  You know what it is like to open that book and see some of your work.  It is a really feel good kind of thing to see how your work has grown and changed.   My post  Four Ways to Start the Sketchbook Habit may help you rev up your practice.

My Smallmendous Art Kit makes painting on the plane a very easy thing to do.

2.  Start putting together a great travel kit: This time of year is great for getting your travel kit together.  It might seem early to you but once that kit is together you need time to practice with it too.  There is nothing worst than being out on the road and realizing there is something missing from your kit.  My post  My Really Smallmendous Art Kit talks about my really small travel kit which I spent a few years perfecting.  If this one is too small I have a slightly bigger set up here.

Having a fun Title Page really inspires me to add more when I travel.

3.  Start prepping your sketchbook for upcoming events:  This may seem like a strange thing to do but prepping your sketchbook pages for future use is fun.  I found prepping my book for my trips is even more fun as it really gets me excited for the upcoming trip.  It is also so much fun to open your book to the next page and find little surprises drawn in the corners or colours/patterns waiting for you to bring to life.  Check out my post
Is Your Sketchbook Ready for You for ideas on getting started.  Of course my favourite is getting a special sketchbook ready for a trip. Here is a bit on prepping for my trip to Italy this year.  Post: Is Your Sketchbook Ready to Roll?

Can you REALLY  draw a poppy from this?  Read more about A Line of Action

4.  Start a drawing:  Maybe you would like to try something different.  If drawing is something you like to do, think about approaching it in a different way.  After working with figure drawing I became interested in working with A Line of Action. I found it was a great tool to have in my bag for attacking drawings of wildlife and nature.  You can read more about it on my post: How to find the Starting Point in a Drawing

Page 1 & 2 of my Inktober Collage - One Tangle a day Read more Here

5. Start getting your Pen working: Of course you knew I couldn't talk about 'getting started' on something without mentioning pen work.  My post Have You felt the FREEDOM of the Line? may help nudge you in that directions.  And of course if you pick up a pen be sure and try a few tangles while you are at it.  Read more on my post: Have You been on a Tangled Adventure?

Starting something new can be exciting, fun, a new journey.  Grab an idea and run with it.  You never know where that journey will take you.  I look forward to sharing my journey with you as I jump into my new projects. I look forward to hearing about yours.

Sketch-Booking in Italy - Part 2 - Painting & Drawing Tips

My Sisters and I at the Leaning Tower of Pisa
Okay, I must admit, I have been home for 2 weeks now and sometimes it seems like a dream.
How can my trip be over, already?

Have you been there?  Planned, dreamed, organized and packed.  Headed out on adventure.
Then suddenly it is over.

But . . . .
I have awesome memories.  So do you, I am sure.
I have awesome pictures.  For sure you do as well.

But. . . .
Do you have an awesome sketchbook too?
I know that was your goal, to put together a journal/sketchbook of your trip.  You collected stuff, started stuff, but now you are home and  . . .

Been there, done that.  So disappointing.

A few sketches from our visit to Cinque Terre

I have pledged to improve and improve I have.  Each year I juggle and change my kits, try new sketchbooks, practice new skills, things are really starting to work.  (Compare the difference in my sketchbook 2 years ago when I went to Scotland to now my Italy book. Scotland Post ). I certainly haven’t reached perfection  . . .

But quantity and quality and daring has improved.

Here are some of things I tried that might inspire/help you to make your Art a bigger part of your adventures.  (See Sketching Booking in Italy Part 1 for more suggestions.)

The Skyline of Florence was drawn from Piazzale Michalango, the busts were done in the evening from my photo, writing and Panna Cotta on a lunch break

1.       Work in Stages: Once I fully accepted this idea, it was actually a very freeing thing to do.  I no longer felt anxious to “finish” what I was doing.  I didn’t feel I was ‘on the clock’,  my sisters would be back and things had to be finished.  I could relax and just draw/paint. I think it actually speeded me up.  Often when they returned I was wrapping up, feeling tired and ready to move on. My secret, I first took a picture of what I was going to work on.  This meant I could go back later to add more, paint more or . . . .  (See more ideas on Prepping your book before you go here)

Trains and Planes have handy little tables that let you finish up work on the page or add a little extra.

2.      Start with my most important ‘thing’:  this actually sounds very simple when I write it but in life it is really difficult.  When faced with a Huge Amount of  Very Interesting Things, ie.   Rome’s Colosseum, Vernazza, one of 5 villages of Cinque Terre.  It is overwhelming.  You want to capture everything.  Where to start?

Picture of Venice canal was my focus but once that was done I decided to add the front of a gondola to change the perspective a bit.  Also, left most of the picture just ink, colour for the sky and colour for the foreground.

When I accepted I couldn’t do it all, it changed my thinking.  I started to pick something that captured my eye and worked from there.  This meant I jumped in faster, got to work faster, felt confident faster.  Once, underway I moved further and further out from my focus point.  I felt I ended up capturing more and more of everything.  I really feel it was my change in philosophy that helped.

The carousel and the Leaning Tower of Pisa were jump in and draw pictures.  A few pencil marks to set the space for the building in the bottom, then get too it.

3.      Minimum Layout, jump to pen right away: Okay, I admit, this may be hard for you to do but you might want to set this as a goal.  Part of this means letting go of perfection and part of this means building confidence to jump in and draw.
My favourite Outdoor Sketching medium is ink with watercolour.
I start with ink.  I found I  just grab my book and pen and ‘going for it’.  No pencil first.  This really speeds things up as I am not reworking areas that were first done in pencil.  I know you are going to say, you can’t make changes once that permanent ink is down.  But if you work in ink for awhile you will soon learn that mistakes can ‘disappear’.  They get lost in the detail, in the crosshatching for shading, become a tree/bush/window, get covered in paint . . .   There is a host of things that can hide a wayward line, if you let go.  And move on.

Taking a break to sketch on the Spanish Steps, Rome, Italy

4.      Minimize Disruptions: Ok.  The one thing I haven’t talked about is the other people around you.  There are lots.  Let me tell you, on the Spanish Steps in Rome, there were tons of people.  But . . .  I find people are the same everywhere.  They love to see what your doing.  They love to watch.  But they do respect your space.  Very few will interrupt you while you work.  Once your stop, look around, make eye contact - you are giving them permission to talk.  So if you don’t want to be disturbed, keep your head down and pen/brush moving.

I love the old buildings and the Church at Bagnoregio and Orvieto

In Bagnoregio a large group of Japanese tourist came by while I was sketching the courtyard on the page above. They watched, they hung over my shoulder, they took pictures of my book, me and even sat beside me and had pictures taken with me.  All without disturbing me.  When I finished a section and looked up, we smiled and nodded and moved on.  It was kind of a neat experience for all of us.

5.      Finish your book with a flair: This is the finale for me.  The big motivator.  I take my plain navy book and add some life to the cover. And yes, this is something I do when I get back home but it could also be done before you leave.   More on this in next week's post.

Did you TEST RUN your Portable ART KIT - Painting & Drawing Tips

Have you ever bought a new pair of Shoes?
Yeah!

Well, don't you walk around with them, go short distances before taking them to the BIG event.
Even more so, if they are for something SPECIAL.

Sun Shining at Gowlland Pt, Pender Island - Max and I had an awesome walk along the shore.

As many of you know, I curl. I need new curling shoes.

No big deal, you might think.  But it is.  One shoe has a gripper tread and the other has a sliding tread.  All sliding treads are not the same.  They come in different thickness and react differently on the ice.  Some are fast and some are slow.  Throwing a curling rock is all about feeling how fast to slide and throw.  This feel develops over lots of practice. ie.  many Test Runs. So suddenly showing up with new shoes and a slider that you haven't 'felt' yet will guarantee disaster for your first draw.  Even the pros guard their shoes carefully as they know how hard it is to get 'the feel' with new shoes.

Bennett's Bay, Mayne Island. - Clouds starting to move off the bay.

Your Art Kit needs a Test Run too. . . .

I don't mean just pulling it out in the studio and working on a few projects. Although that is important too.  (Don't have a great Smallmendous Portable Art Kit?  See my last post here)  I mean pack your bag, head out somewhere and really try it out.

Seems Redundant, eh?! . . .
Not really.  First of all, have you really thought about how you will carry your Art Kit and stuff.  That's right, stuff.  You will need your sketchbook, drink, (I use water than I have paint water too), snack, wallet, phone and/or camera, (always good to take a picture of what you paint/draw in case you don't finish), sunglasses, keys, . . . .I know hey, the list just goes on and on.  You need 1 case that can take all of that.  I use a small backpack.  Easy to carry, hands free, no shoulder/arm pain.

Okay, bag packed. Spot found. Now pull out your kit and go for it.

Things to note . . .
1. Are you able to work comfortably?  Do you need a clip to hold your book open? An elastic to hold the pages. Is your book too big/small to work on?  Will the paper take your washes and not warp?

Pages not warping, even with all that wash.  I look for books with heavy pages, I find the Mixed Medium ones the best.

2.  Are you happy with your colours?  Are you finding you are missing your favourites?  You followed my suggestions but is there something more you like to work with?
3.  Brushes working well?  Were you able to figure out how to work with them and make your work sing?
4.  Anything missing?

Rainy at Hope Bay - I like to add a bit of writing to my books.

Getting it Right . . .
You might think because I do this alot that I don't need to give things a Test Run.  I do.  My kit sits ready, to grab and run.  Sometimes I forget, a pen is dead.  My pencil or eraser got lost on the last trip. My pencil sharpener is dull.  My bag is awkward.  I am not happy with one of my colours.

Lagoon at Hope Bay - getting good darks took layers.  I decided I need to try a new colour.

As you know, I am off to Italy soon and I plan on doing lots of sketching.  There is no do-overs, on this trip.  So things need to be ready.  I went on a short trip to Mayne Island and Pender and did my Spring Test Run.  There were changes: new sharpener; changed my pens; decided to fill that empty spot on my tray with Indigo, to see if I could get some darks faster; tried out a new backpack - light, few pockets, easy to load, water carrier on the outside.

I'm READY.  . . .

Are you?

After my big show next week, see below, I am off to Italy.  Next post will be in a few weeks - Report on my Sketching Time in Italy.  Ciao
