1 Awesomemazonly Sketchbook Activity - Painting & Drawing Tips

Are you up for a Challenge?
A Sketchbooking Activity that will keep you entertained for days?

And when you are done, you will feel sooooooooo good.  And will have some NEW thoughts about your own practice.
Ok. Put your confidence on high and give this a try.

DUCKS IN THE WATER - Mixed Media
See a full view of DUCKS ON THE WATER on Youtube here.   (Be sure to like and comment while your are there. 🤗)

For this Activity you need to first prepare your paper

1.  Cut 6 pieces of paper, 5.5 x 7.5 (I used Rivas paper and Arches 140 HP.  Use any paper that is strong and thick enough to take paint.  Watercolour paper of any kind is good.)  You can have more than 6 panels but keep it to even numbers)

Panel 1 Monoprint

2.  Add random colour to your papers using 2 or 3 colours.  I prepared my paper as Monotypes.  (See last post: Have you tried Monotypes There is a write up and video to help you .)  If you don't want to to prints on your paper than just make random marks with your 3 colours like I did with my Monoprints.  You can collage things to your paper or stencil things.  Anything to give it a marks but try and not let them get too dark so your ink work will show.

Panel 2 - my Monoprint - random colour that has interesting textures, shapes . . .

3.  When dry take your papers and arrange them in some kind of order.  I laid mine out horizontally as I liked the look and feel of that arrangement.  Tape them together with the tape on the back.  Fold them up like an accordion.

You're ready to draw. . .

Now settle down, I know your confidence just dropped a bit.  You can draw whatever you like. Flowers, buildings, people, landscapes . . .

When walking with Max I saw some mallard ducks and decided I would draw ducks in the water. (I am a wildlife artist so you knew animals would be in there somewhere.) Totally random idea that had nothing to do with my colours or their shapes.

Just a few of my duck pictures for reference
I searched through my photo references for ducks.  I am out at Riefel Bird Sanctuary a lot as I have work in their gift shop so I have lots of duck pictures.  I picked a few that had ducks doing different things.

I looked at my first page and decided a duck could peek over the painted area and drew him in.  I then began to make the painted area more bush like.  As I moved to the next page it had lots of marks on it and decided to make them into grasses and hid a duck in the grasses.

Panel 1 & 2 once I started drawing

That is where I stalled  . . . .

I needed more ideas as to what could be along the water's edge. (Confidence low, for sure.) Fortunately Max and I walk regularly in a wooded area by a small stream and I could take some pictures and get ideas.  You might have to wonder the internet a bit.  (Remember, I did say this was going to take you a few days to finish)  I also realized I needed more than a little shading to make things work. (See Tools as I introduced more tools into the drawing part.)

Got some great ideas for things to put along my water's edge from these pictures.  Really loved the fern in the rock cluster in the bottom picture.

Of course, ferns, bushes, tree trunks, rocks, branches, leaves . . .  They were all there.  I started drawing a few of these. (Confidence Way Up again.)  Always I am mindful of what I am drawing and not paying a lot of attention to the colours that were already there.

Panels 1-5 WIP - Realized I needed a another panel as I couldn't make an accordion book with only 5 panels!!

Sometimes I  captured a blobs into my leaf or rock but I mostly stayed true to my images and let the colour fall where it wanted to.  To me this is the fun of it.  Seeing how the colours suddenly make something so interesting in a way I never would have painted it.

Didn't use a lot of materials to complete my pictures.  They were added as the need arose.

Tools:
My choice of tools also developed as I went and as needs arose.  I need shading and values - I decided to use Herbin Perle Noire Ink.  It gave me great grayscales that matched my ink and didn't add more colours to my picture.
I used 08 & 05 Picma Black Pens.  (found the 08 gave a stronger line)
Steadler Fine Tip Ink Pen.
Pencil to do some layout.
Black Coloured Pencil to shade rocks and give them texture.
White Charcoal pencil to lighten the acrylic blobs.
Molotow One4all Acrylic Pen to give me a shot of white, when I needed it.

Don't hesitate to use other things to meet your goals.
Lots happening in this panel but after putting in the shading and softening some of the colour with the white Charcoal it turned out pretty nice.
Yes, this project will keep you busy for awhile.  Yes, your confidence will ebb and flow as you work through it.  Yes, it is almost never ending as there will always be a little something more you can do.  And Yes, you will be very pleased with it when you're done.

But you're not done yet. . . .

Next post I will show you how to finish it up to make that Awesomemazonly Sketchbook.

Have You Tried Monotypes?? - Painting & Drawing Tips

If you haven't tried Monotypes, YOU ARE MISSING ALL THE FUN!!

3 Different Monotypes - Stand Alone Art or Embellish or Collage into something Else - Your Choice

Ok, maybe not all the fun but certainly lots of it.

What are Monotype?

Frankly I have never really been interested in any kind of Print making.  But I had booked Katina Giesbrecht for a demo on Monotypes for our art club.  (of course before the world changed . . .)  I was really intrigued with the opportunities that opened up with Monotypes.  I decided to look into them more.  For those wondering, a Monotype is a One-of-a-kind print off a plate/glass.

You can easily find the supplies in your paint cupboard or find you need only a few things to get started

Gather your supplies first:

 - a piece of glass (for your plate. I used a piece from one of my frames)  (gelatin sheets or silicone baking sheet also work well. )
- acrylic paints  (Open Acrylics have a longer drying time so do work the best)
- brush, roller, spatula, 2 inch brayer, stick, ( or any kind of tool for mark making.)
- paper towel for clean up
- water bowl
- variety of paper cut to size ( I used cardstock, Rives Cotton Paper, Arches Watercolour paper.  Rice Paper, Stonehenge  Yuko, are also good.)

Apply the paint onto the glass using your paint tool.
Set up:
1. I put plastic down with my glass on top.  Under the plasic I put a piece of paper so could see where on the glass my paper would fit.  I used 11 x 14 glass and papers, 8 x 10 and 5.5 x 7.7.  I marked the smaller size on the background paper as well.

2.  Water, paints, marking tools, cut paper ready and handy.  You need to work fast before the paint dries so have everything ready to go. You can use a medium to lengthen the drying time for the paint.

Place your paper over the paint and press hard.  Rubbing all over to ensure paper and paint bond.

Start Painting:
3.  Start painting onto your glass - use only 1 colour or 2 to start.
4.  When design is ready place your paper over it and press down.  Roll with a brayer or rub with your hands

If you have a brayer use that to ensure paint and paper are bonding.
5.  Peel the paper off the glass

Peel the paper off the glass and have a look.
6.  Take another piece of paper and put it on the glass and apply press.  This second print is called a  “Ghost Print”.  Work quickly as your paint is drying quickly. THe Ghost Print usually has less paint on it than the first one and often more interesting textures.

Ghost Print from a different print.  Notice the interesting textures and lighter colours.

Have some Fun with it:

-  Clean off the glass and add a bit more colour/design and then press the printed paper on to it.
- Spray a bit of water on your paper before pressing to the painted glass.  This can thin the paint and make colours lighter.

Here I have taken a Ghost Print and added some yellow to one side of it.

- Make some texture or lines in the paint on the glass before placing the paper on it.
- Try different shapes, colours, textures onto existing printed paper or start new ones.
- Add as many layers as you want.

Monotypes (Monoprints) can be a stand alone Art Form or they can be collaged into your other art.  I am going to use mine to collage with and to draw on.

Secrets Hidden in the Shadows of Your Paintings - Painting & Drawing Tips

Studio painting is the new norm.  And Studio painting means using photographs for reference.  I love them.  I have huge amounts of Gigabytes dedicated to Photo References.

But photos don't tell the whole story. . . .

MAGNOLIAS - Making Shadows with White
What colour is an Orange?
Of course you know what an orange is.  And when you direct a light on it, there is a lovely highlight on the light side.  But now wonder over to the shadow side. That's where the secrets are.

An ORANGE- from my sketchbook practice (Betty Edwards - Colour, a Course in mastering the art of mixing Color

In actual fact, very little of an orange is REALLY orange.  Right now I am focusing on improving my work in the shadows.  I can see from the ORANGE painting above that there are lots of colours in the shadows. A brown yellow as the light moves to shadow, red orange, then yellow orange, soft mauve and finally really dark purple.   No sold black shadow as your photo will show.

Looking closer I can now see that I missed putting in reflected light in my shadow.  There should be a bit of green from the lime on the left and pink from the grapefruit on the left.  I did put the darker red orange reflected on the right side from the orange there.

Lots is happening in the shadows. . . .

LIGHTHOUSE AT AMPHITRITE POINT, UCLULET, BC - Note the shadow colours of the rocks
Rocks are a fun place to really play with shadow colours.  In this sketch I used lots of blues, purples, pinks and some green to make the shadows.  The order of the colours chosen was based on their value.  The deepest purples for the darkest spots and the others placed for mid and light tones.

Black and White Version shows how the value of each shadow colour was used to sculpture the rocks.
Looking at the Black and White Version of the Lighthouse really makes it clear how the value of the colours created the shadows in the rocks.  I chose my colours based on the reflected light and my own preference.  The colours blended well because they were consistent throughout the painting.  And the colours were repeated in many areas.  I think now as I look back on it, there should have been more greens in the shadows.

Magnolia Reference - Gray shadows on White
Rocks are fun but what about the WHITE STUFF?

Here is my photo reference of the Magnolia flower (see above).  Gray to black shadows.  Not nearly as much fun as my finished piece.  ( I like my little sketch, hope you do too).

I am using my sketchbook to practice working with shadows. My goals are:

- use 2 or 3 different colours to make the shadows
- look for places to add reflected light
- try different colours (not my usual ones - turquoises is not a colour I use a lot but I really love how my whites seem brighter with it in the shadows)
- be more adventurous!!  (Probably the hardest thing to do.)

MAGNOLIAS - Black and White version of my painting
A quick check of my painting in Grayscales shows my shadow colours are the right values.

Check out the Shadows of other paintings and see what secrets are hiding in their shadows.  Two BC artists I like to check out are Marney Ward, a watercolourist specializing in flowers and Perry Haddock, who does landscapes and portraits mostly in acrylic but some watercolour as well.

Have fun in your sketchbook and see you next week.

5 Things Drawing Bunnies Teaches YOU - Paint and Drawing Tips

Easter is Coming UP Fast.  Rabbits, Easter Eggs and CHOCOLATE are on my mind!!

WHAT makes a RABBIT?

My days are busy with drawing and painting.  Not always fine art pieces but often a page in my Sketchbook.  As you know, I am an Avid Supporter of Sketchingbooking as a Way of Life.

I just finished working on a session from Sketchbook Revival with picture book illustrator, Nina Rycroft on drawing a stuffed bunny.  Of course I had to move out from there to cartoon bunnies.  It really was fun.  One bunny led to another and soon I was making a little storyboard of bunnies.  As I worked I realized that those little bunnies had a lot to teach me.  (See last post for info on Sketchbook Revival here).

5 Things the Bunnies Told ME:

1.  Attributes
What really makes a bunny?  When you look at a shape, what defines the 'bunniness' in it?  Big ears, fluffly tail, big back feet.  It isn't really that much.  But very important.  Any shape with those ears, feet and tail says bunny.  When you're painting a tree, what makes it a maple tree rather than a fir tree.  What in the shapes and patterns says maple tree. . . .  or a Rose rather than a Peony.  Asking that question is important to finding the essences of anything you draw or paint.

Bunny Construction - Using a Line of Action and then placing body parts, makes it much easier to Draw any Rabbit/Animal/Person

2. Movement
I turned my bunnies into people bunnies.  I made them run, jump and sit.  Suddenly I needed to know how a person runs, jumps, sits.  Where are their hands? How do their legs move? I realized I didn't really know. Now as I walk with Max, I am looking at head, arm and leg movements of animals and people.

3. Drawing
Here's where I really liked using that Line of Action.  Seeing the flow of the body and then matching up the body parts to the Line is my first step.  This gives me a framework to hang the clothes on.  Flesh out the arms and legs.  Finally add the embellishments - buttons, lace, hats.  Of course it is a people bunny.  But whether it is a person, animal or figure you need this information.

HURRY, SCURRY TO THE PICNIC - Once I had the framework, dressing my bunny was easy. Adding Colour is DEFINITELY FUN!!

4. Values
Adding colour to your bunnies means thinking of shapes and values.  Giving them mass and weight means visualizing the Shadows and Highlights.  Actually it is even more than just values.  It is also playing with your palette.  Trying different colours and seeing how they react with each other.  A great testing ground before hitting 'The Main Show'.

5. Confidence
After the first bunny things get easier and easier.  Soon I was tying my rabbits together with a bit of story.  Ideas were flowing.  Pen was scribbling.  Bunnies hopped onto the page.  It was joyful and fun.  Playful drawing builds confidence in your Mark Making.  It is motivating and inspiring.  All good things to keep you in an Artful Way.

EASTER PICNIC - As I said, once you start drawing these little guys little stories just come to mind.  (Ooops!! Sorry, didn't have time to paint them before posting but will get busy later and paint them.)
Happy Easter and have fun with your own RABBITS!!

Catch the Sketchbook Habit - Painting & Drawing Tips

SPECIAL NEWS - I'm NOw TEACHING ONLINE!!!
See more at the the end of the POst.
👇👇👇👇

Bunny from 100 Dots with Noah Scalin  - Sepia Pen and coloured pencils

Are your cupboards full of unused Art Supplies?  Do sparkly bright colours call to you?  The pens, the paints, the powders. . .

Deer in the Field - this is more typical me - Wildlife with watercolour
I must confess. . . .

I have been lured away from the straight and narrow by luscious colourful pens, creamy smooth pastels, even a few acrylics!! (I know you are shocked.) Me enticed by acrylic mediums, gels and paint..  How the mighty have fallen, eh?!

Well they are no longer 'layabouts' in my cupboards. . .

Deer in the Forest - Black pen and Acrylic  Monoprint. This is definitely something I want to do more of.
I have cracked open my shiny new DIY Sketchbook (see last post here on how to make your own sketchbook)  Now I am taking some of those shiny new materials for a ride. How did it happen, you ask.  Well,  It all started innocently enough.  I joined Karen Abend, from Italy, for her Sketchbook Revival 2020.

Now I trying everything!!

Cupcakes - Sketching Food with Charlie O'Shields - Black pen & Watercolour

Sketching different subjects, trying new approaches, experimenting with different colours.  (BTY, Cupcakes are not a good subject when you are trapped in your house!! Had to stop and do a bit of baking.)

Really enjoyed learning about different Lettering with Amanda Arneill - Black & Sepia Pens and coloured pencils

Once into a project I am into my cupboard hauling out stuff I have never used before.  Having fun.

Squirrels in the Park - black ink with acrylic blobs - with Carla Sonheim.  Of course I had to incorporate animals in my blobs.

But the Project that really took me over the top was The Garden with Karen Stamper.  I was using stenciling, charcoal pencils, charcoal sticks, pastel pencils, Indian Ink, pens. . .   Even used a water-soluble oil pastel stick.  Don't even know where it came from!!?  But it sure did some neat mark making. (That is the blue streaks you see, touched up with a bit of water)

The Garden - So much fun!!  I gathered sticks, ferns, leaves and branches from the park to help with inspiration and Ideas.

And the best part is the projects are done in a day or so.  Then just turn the page and move on. Very happy with the size I choose to make my book.  (Special Note: The Garden is 4 pages, I taped an extension to the page in my book. It is really neat to open it up.)

In total there will be 28 sessions with 28 different Artists that like to sketchbook.  I am sure you will find something that interests you.  Check out the sessions hereThey will be available till April 26.  You can see some of the other creations from the sessions on Facebook - Sketchbook Revival.

So, Catch the Sketchbook Habit and Dive In.  Soon you will find there is "Just not enough hours to the day!!"

Happy Sketchbooking and see you next week.
