Major Change !!! Added a New Colour to my Palette - Painting & Drawing Tips

As an Outdoor Sketcher, you know you must pack light and work quickly. Light, weather and life keeps you on the go.  So a small well set up Travel Palette is vital to your success.  

Several years ago I moved to my present Travel Kit - see My Really SMALLmendous Art Kit.  It has proven to be Amazing!  My palette is small enough for light weight travel and big enough to meet any challenge.   I have used it while balancing on a rocky ledge, floating in my kayak, and relaxing comfortably on an airplane. It has come through with flying colours.

The most important element of my travel kit is my paint palette.  It's where the main action happens. It holds 12 paint pans.  But as you can see, one is empty.  I have left it that way for some time.  Unsure of what I wanted to put there.

Yes, I use other colours besides these when painting in my studio but  . . .

You know what it's like.  You pull in a new colour for those one or two paintings.  The colour works for them but then you don't seem to use it again for awhile.  It seemed very important to me to find 'the right colour' to fill that spot.  

Well I found it!!!  

The winner is "Payne's Gray" (PG).   I can't say it was a new colour to me.  It has certainly been in the mix on my large studio palette. But I seemed to always shy away from it.  I was concerned I would end up with 'mud' when mixing it with other colours.  I would now like to apologize to that Gray.  I was wrong.

It really come to the forefront when I was looking for a quick dark.  In Outdoor sketching you often do not have time to mix a lot of colours. The instant 'blacks' that I tried were just too black and didn't seem to mix well with my other colours.  (I know we all have our own preference for how we depict  shadows.  Often I want them warm and I just found the blacks too cold)  I found that Payne's Gray gave me a great dark and also one I could 'push' in any direction: warm or cold.

Payne's Gray mixes really well with my other colours in my palette.  Most of the colours are transparent, non-staining colours. Adding PG to them muted the hues.  I especially loved the new blues, browns and greens I could quickly mix

By itself, PG presents a lovely variety of blue to gray hues that can be both warm and cool.  But when the paint is thick, it gives a really dark colour. 

As a person that loves to use lots of glazing with my watercolours, PG responds really well.  Check out the branch that my Chickadee rests on, in my painting at the top of this post. ↑↑↑ Look at the lovely gray it makes for the branch and note the rosy colouring in the shadows.  So Neat.

6 Tips on Painting with an Itsy-Bitsy Palette - Painting and Drawing Tips

Do you dream of sitting by Trevi fountain in Italy and sketching?

Yes, it’s fun! It’s something that I like to do. Not just sketch but PAINT.

An ITSY-BITSY PALETTE with brush - 12.2 x 7.3 x 2.3

BUT to do that, you need AN ITSY-BITSY PALETTE. And painting with that itsy-bitsy paint palette can be a challenge!

5 Tips to Get that ITSY-BITSY PALETTE working for you:

1. Have a bigger Paint brush: The paintbrush that usually comes with Itsy Bitsy pallets are too small. They are meant for dry brushing. Your wash for a sky will end up streaky and patchy. A round brush size 6 or 8 with a point works well for portable sketchbooks up to 9 x 12 inches. Make sure the brush has a bit of fullness to hold paint and water for a wash. One that collapses and stores in your palette is even better.

   

   Put a large drop of water on each colour to rehydrate the paint
   
   

2. Drop Water onto each of your colours: Before you start your sketch, drop a bit of water on each of the colours in your paint tray and close it. This will help to soften your colours and they will be ready for you. You might consider carrying a small spray bottle if you feel your paints are constantly dry when you need them.

3. Pick a Starting Colour: Decide which colour to start with. This time of year, green is everywhere so I tend to start with it. One section of my tray is for my green mixes. The other tray becomes my blues/pinks/yellows.

   

   Note the Green Puddle has several different greens in it.  

4. Use a premixed colour to speed things up: This is particularly true with Green. I use Sap Green (a pre mixed colour) then push it to warm or cool by adding blues or yellows, even some red. As you’re mixing draw it away from the main puddle so that you have space for more than one kind of green.

   

   Note the different colour puddled areas in the mixing area.  

5. Move around your Sketch: If you have a colour that goes in several places paint all of them before moving on. Your mixing space is limited and so once a colour is done, you will need that spot to mix new colours.

   

   If you need a spot of pure colour clean a spot for it. 

   
   

6. Keep your paint tray mess. Often my second tray has bits of left over colour I need for a little shot of detail. I seldom clean the whole tray but if I need a pure spot of colour I will clean a small spot for mixing.

A few Test Runs at home is definitely a good idea. Having everything in working order when you are on your Sketching Adventure is key to success. With a little practice you will really enjoy the freedom that little palette gives you.

How to Make your Art Retreat a Super Experience? - Painting & Drawing Tips

Whippee!!! I am off to not One but Two Art Retreats this summer!!
Not only will it be fun to hang out and work with fellow Artists, but I will be the Instructor.  You probably already guessed what the topic will be, that's right.  Outdoor Sketching.  

Getting OUT THERE is half the FUN!!

 The Adventuras Retreat will be in Shuswap, BC, June 23-26 & September 15-18, 2023. It's a worry free event: Transportation (from the Lower Mainland), food, accommodation  and instruction are all included.  $450 Single Room $300 Shared Room.  More info at the bottom of this Post.

An Art Retreat is a chance to get Out and Just Do It.  Can you imagine, no cooking, no planning, no mucking about.  A chance to be pampered and relax.  Of course for me that means settling down somewhere and sketching, reading or following a trail to see where it goes.  

But to really enjoy yourself there is PREP than needs to be done . . .

Being prepared before heading out on a Retreats, really can add to the experience.  (Ok, I will admit it.   I was a Girl Guide when I was young.  "Be Prepared" is kind of my middle name.)  But when travelling away from your home base things go better with a few extra preparations. 

When packing remember the KISS theory- Keep It Simple

Ways to Make your Art Retreat a Super Success

1. Keep all your Organization Material Together: When you Register for an Art Retreat it is usually well in advance.  A year ahead is not uncommon for a long 10-14 Day Retreat.  And certainly 3-5 months is pretty common for shorter ones.  That means that lots of information is passed out at the beginning and you don't really look at it again until a few weeks out from the event.  

Set up a folder (ie. Art Retreat 2023)  in you email Inbox to store all the emails pertaining to the event. (Google can help you figure out how to do this)  Try and use the same email thread for all the correspondence so you have all the information in one spot.  

Heading out for walk and stopping to sketch is the Icing on the Cake. 

2.  Organize your Art Supplies:  You will get a supply list from the Instructor with both suggested and optional items.  Keep it Simple.  Less is Better.  It is no fun hauling a heavy container of 'art stuff' around.  Don't forget you also need things like water, snacks and weather gear.  

My Kit (4.5 x 7.5) & My Sketchbook

For my Outdoor Sketching Retreat let me show you what that looks like.  Supplies: sketchbook, 

2B Graphite Pencil, eraser – white vinyl & kneaded eraser, .03 & .05 Mircron Pigma Permeant Ink Pen,
pack of watercolours, water container, watercolour brushes – 10 & 6 round, paper towel, Container to hold everything.

The beauty of Outdoor Sketching is you can do it Anywhere.    

3.  Give Your Art Kit a Test Run:  This is CRICIAL! Imagine Hiking up to Machu Picchu, Peru stopping to sketch the moment and your brand new pens are dry.  (Actually I always take extra pens as I find sometimes the air pressure when flying can upset them) 

Making a Title Page for your Book is a good way to give Materials a Test Run (of Course you need a gondola picture when going to Italy) 

Use your kit in the studio and take it out on a few local trips.  See how everything will work for you.  You might find a bigger/smaller water container is needed, a larger/smaller brush would be nice or the sketchbook isn't really working.  Certainly understanding how your paints work with your sketchbook is important.  I find books and paper all have their own quirks, sum papers grabs the paint and it is hard to do a wash and others float the paint so much it is hard to get a good dark.  There is no right or wrong but playing with things ahead of time really helps.

4.  Get to Know Something about Where you are Going:  Maybe this is the Girl Guide in me but I like to have an idea of what things are like at the new place.  Things like: Sight Seeing Points; Weather; Terrain; possible hiking spots; history about the area.  These are things that can add to the experience.  When going to a different country I also like to collect images of symbols and common sights of things to decorate my sketchbook.

Whether you join me on the Shuswap Retreat or head off somewhere else, I wish you a great trip.  The camaraderie of a group with a common interest is so inspiring.  You will have great memories to keep you creating on those cold, dark winter studio days.

Do You Have a Bucket List? Painting & Drawing Tips

What’s on that list?  Traveling to exotic places?

 Trying a new activity? Learning a new skill?

I do a lot of teaching and I find students wanting to take lessons come in groups: ‘want to learn how to draw”; ‘always wanted to learn how to paint”; and others who ‘want to sketch and journal their travels”. 

I am in the ‘sketcher and journal group’. 

Maybe you are too. . .

I am a Sketcher & Journaler - My pages vary from full page paintings to small pictures and writing of various amounts.

I have a variety of sketchbooks that I have used to document trips to Europe and Asia, camping in the northern Canada and canoeing and portaging in Northern BC.  I find that each of those books have cemented memories into my heart.  It makes sense.  In order to complete a sketch, it means I have spent at least 20-30 minutes working on site and often more time finishing it up in the evening.  

Really, can you ask for a nicer spot to paint?! - boats go by, birds drop in and even a seal popped up to say hi.  

Now don’t get me wrong, my sketches aren’t all great . . .

Especially  my early work. I must at admit, you can be very critical with yourself when you start out. And of course you will have ones you love.  And hate.  But, they are all filled with memories.  Good or bad they bring that moment alive in your mind.  They are also a document of your skill development.  I look back and feel good when I see how far I have come. 

In my sketching journey I have found a few a few Universal Truths

1.     Pack light - it is surprising how quickly your pack fills up.  Along with art supplies you need, drinks, snacks, a seat/pad, hat, . . . .  See what I mean.  The list can really grow quickly depending on where you are going.

My Setup.  A Treat to have a table to work on  

2.    Work Small - it takes time to fill a page.  Something close to 5 x 8 inches is a big enough page to fill.  Even at that you might want to do more than 1 or 2 smaller pictures on the page. Anything bigger and you have to think about Truth #1. I work a bit bigger only if I know I will have time to finish. 

3.   Don’t Make Eye Contact - well you can if you want, but if you do, people will stop and talk.  You wont get much done.  I tend to keep my head down and work and make eye contact when I am ready for a break.

4.    Let Go of Perfection -  This is your sketchbook with your thoughts/sketches for you to enjoy.  Experiment.  Enjoy the flow. 

5.    Focus on the Subject first - forget about all the studio things you do.  Start with your subject then branch out if time.  Light changes.  Boats sail away.  Rain falls.   

Not time to finish but can come back tomorrow or finish in the evening.

IT IS TIME to get Organized for OUTDOOR SKETCHING - Painting and Drawing Tips

Did you just say "OMG, WENDY IS NUTS! It is cold wet and dreary out there.  I am not going Outdoor Sketching!!

True, the great summer sketching weather is over.  Did you get out and enjoy it?  I did.  But it has taken me lots of trials and tribulations to get there.  There is more to being successful then running out the door with paper and pen in you hand.  

I would like to save you some of my frustrations . . . .

First of all, Outdoor Sketching doesn't mean you need to 'commune with nature'.  It really means you have your 'stuff' and you can sketch anywhere: restaurants, airports, street corners, living rooms, kitchen . . . .  It means you are portable, ready and not in your studio.  I live on the west coast of Canada and lots of my family live on Vancouver Island.  To get there we need to travel 1.5 -2 hr on a ferry.  I sketch the whole time.  

Awesome Memory!! Sketching at a Sidewalk cafe, Edinburgh, Scotland with my sister.  Urban sketching is just as much fun as nature sketching.  

Getting your equipment ready is a BIG priority.  Being able to grab and go is really important.  If you have to stop, find a paint brush, look for a sketchbook, get a new pen.  It just is not going to happen.  Now that summer is over you have time to put together a great little setup that will go anywhere.  I say little because that is really important.  No one wants to pack a studio with them but at the same time, you want your favourite materials with you.  After all this is about enjoying your creative process.

Here is where I can really save you some frustration.  I have finally got a set up I am really loving. Light, easy to pack, great for any location and full of my favourite materials.  You can see it here on a video I prepared for the Arts Council of Surrey's Instructional Series.  I know your will find it helpful.  Video: Get Ready for Outdoor Sketching.  

 Travel Art Kit and Sketchbook are VERY small but have EVERYTHING I NEED!

A good carrying bag is very important.  It keeps stuff together, safe and easy to find.  Of course my pack breaks down to the most important elements. Your Kit.  Now my preference is to work with pencil, pen, watercolour or combinations of them.  So this is what I have in my kit.  

This is What's in the Pack - see below for the Contents

Kit Contents:  

1. Mixed Media Sketchbook 5 in x 8 in. or close to it
2. Very small water container (courtesy of David's Tea) 
3. Metal Pallet: 5 in x 2.5 in folded up  These are awesome, you put your own pans in them and fill them with your own colours
4. Brushes - to waterfilled brushes.  One empty and one full. 
5. Business Card - never hurts to Advertise!
6. Pencil, Pigma Perment Ink Pen 03, 05 (2 of each) kneaded eraser, small pencil sharpener
7. Folding scissors, few coloured pens, piece of paper towel (odds and ends usually slip in there)
8. A picture or 2 to sketch if I am in a place where nothing catches my eye.

You will want to tailor your kit to your needs.  I have seen artists that like to collage carry a small kit of papers and materials ready to go.  The most important thing is to have your Art Kit ready to go.  Dedicate the materials to just it.  Don't be using the brushes, paints, pens, materials for other projects. 

Once it is ready, take it for several TEST RUNS. . .

It is important to work with your kit to make sure you have everything you need.  It also helps to learn its little secrets.  For example: Waterfilled brushes work a little different than regular ones.  I find it is good to have a dry one, to do some dry brushing.  If it is waterfilled it is hard to do that.  I also found that the original colours I put in my palette didn't quite work.  I had one that I never seemed to use!

It doesn't take much equipment to get Good Results - 

Once materials and equipment are ready there are other things you can focus on during the winter.  I found that when I was facing a 'large vista' I didn't know what to draw.  Practice making compositional decisions using sample pictures on-line.  Try a few and see what you like.  Another problem I had, particularly in the summer, was that everything was GREEN.  I spent time reading and experimenting with ways to break out of the green box.
